Title
Title: AI & Systems Automation Consultant/Associate
Reports to: Managing Director / Franchise & Fellowship Lead (depending on workflow)
Engagement Type: Flexible depending on candidate profile and organizational needs: project-based, short-term contract, or full-time engagement.
Location: Depends on arrangement. Short-term contracts may be remote; full-time roles are expected to be Tanzania-based, preferably in Iringa.
ABOUT TANZA: At Tanza, we're on a mission to support every student to thrive in a changing world. Our vision is to transform field implementation in Tanzania by incubating and scaling a network of high-quality, local-led operators. We equip these partners with the systems, tools, and hands-on support needed to deliver proven solutions in classrooms across the country. Today, we serve as a core implementing partner for the MsingiTek program, working with Imagine Worldwide and their partners to bring tablet-based foundational literacy and numeracy learning to students in Standards 1 to 3.
This work is part of a pioneering journey we are taking together with the Prevail Fund, who are funding this trial and collaborating closely with us to design, test, and refine a new model for high-quality, scalable NGO implementation in Tanzania and elsewhere. Their partnership and belief in this bold idea are enabling us to explore what it takes to build a new generation of local operators that are impact-efficient from day one.
ABOUT THE ROLE: We believe small, highly capable teams can achieve exceptional impact when they are equipped with the right systems, tools, and operating structures. Most organizations layer people onto complexity. We are trying to layer systems onto complexity — so leaders spend as much time as possible on what actually drives impact. We are looking for a Systems & AI Automation Associate to help turn this philosophy into reality.
Your job is to deeply understand how our organization functions — from field operations to finance to people management to leadership development — and then design systems, integrations, automations, dashboards, AI workflows, and operational infrastructure that make us dramatically more effective. This role requires someone who is practical, experimental, and systems-minded. You should be comfortable prototyping quickly, testing ideas rapidly, and moving fluidly between field observations, workflow design, automation building, dashboard logic, and product thinking. You will work closely with the Leadership Team to identify high-value opportunities for systems improvement and help shape how a future generation of implementation organizations could operate differently.
We are flexible on the structure of this role. It could begin as a short-term contract focused on building our most urgent systems and operational needs, with the possibility of evolving into a longer-term role over time. We are also open to a full-time engagement for an exceptional candidate excited by a high-intensity, multi-year building experience in Tanzania.
YOUR RESPONSIBILITIES
Field Performance Dashboard
- Help design and build a beta-version of the Tanza Field Performance Dashboard, transforming complex operational data into simple, actionable insights for managers and field teams.
- Develop dashboards, visualizations, and analytics that help teams understand performance trends, identify bottlenecks, diagnose root causes, and prioritize actions for improvement.
- Build intuitive drill-down views that allow leaders to move seamlessly from national or regional performance trends to individual schools, cohorts, and operational drivers.
- Explore how AI can support performance analysis, anomaly detection, forecasting, root-cause analysis, and automated recommendations for field teams and managers.
Fellowship Platform Development
- Help design and build the digital infrastructure behind the Tanza Fellowship, including learning platforms, assessments, operational toolkits, AI-enabled coaching workflows, performance tracking, and feedback systems.
- Build tools that help fellows clearly understand their strengths, gaps, progress, and development priorities while helping Tanza continuously improve the quality of the fellowship through structured feedback, analytics, and iteration.
- Explore how AI can support leadership recruitment, development, operational troubleshooting, coaching, and continuous learning.
Operational Systems & Intelligence
- Build and improve systems that reduce manual work, simplify operations, and help small teams operate with exceptional clarity and efficiency.
- Connect workflows across field operations, HR, finance, procurement, inventory, etc. so information and data flows smoothly and intelligently between teams and platforms.
- Explore how AI, automation, copilots, and operational intelligence can help teams make faster decisions, spot bottlenecks earlier, and spend less time on administrative work.
- Where systems do not yet exist, help design and build practical, user-friendly solutions that fit how teams actually operate.
- Ensure data is reliable, well-structured, and built with strong quality checks so teams can trust the information they are using.
ABOUT YOU: You are curious about how organizations actually function. You enjoy understanding workflows, spotting friction points, simplifying complexity, and building systems that genuinely make people more effective. You are comfortable going deep into details — whether that is data flows, validation checks, operational processes, or workflow logic — but equally comfortable stepping back and simplifying things into tools that are practical, intuitive, and user-friendly.
You already spend time experimenting with AI tools, automation platforms, dashboards, workflows, or operational systems simply because you find them interesting. You enjoy figuring out smarter ways to make things work. Just as importantly, you enjoy getting out into the field, observing how people actually work, identifying bottlenecks in real life, and then turning those observations into better systems, automations, and workflows. You enjoy the cycle of seeing a problem, building a solution, testing it in reality, and improving it further.
You are excited by adventure, experimentation, and helping build something early.
YOUR QUALIFICATIONS: These are qualifications we will look for in your CV. You don’t need to have all of them — but the more boxes you tick, the stronger your application will be.
- Experience building operational systems, automations, dashboards, workflows, integrations, or internal tools that helped drive performance and results.
- Experience building and improving data quality controls, validation structures, and reporting systems.
- Experience working with AI-enabled workflow platforms, low-code development tools, or automation ecosystems such as Retool, Lovable, n8n, Make or Zapier.
- Experience working with AI-assisted coding environments such as Cursor, Cloud Code, or similar tools.
- Experience building AI agents, copilots, or internal knowledge systems is a bonus.
- Experience in startups, high-growth environments, operational consulting or product building is a bonus.
- Willingness to live and work in Tanzania for a period of time and engage closely with field operations.
YOUR SKILLS: In addition to your role’s specific technical skills, at Tanza we value a few shared skills which are outlined in detail in our Leadership Competency Model and here is how they would matter in this role specifically:
- Communication: Ability to explain systems, workflows, and ideas clearly to both technical and non-technical audiences — while actively listening to user feedback.
- Collaboration: Ability to work closely with operational teams and deeply understand how people actually work before designing solutions.
- Business Strategy: Ability to connect systems-building to organizational effectiveness and impact.
- Execution Excellence: Ability to build quickly, iterate continuously, and focus on what creates the most value — while designing systems and tools that are practical, intuitive, and genuinely user-friendly.
- Results Orientation: Focus on whether systems genuinely improve clarity, accountability, speed, and impact — alongside the humility to openly admit when they don’t — in the spirit of continuous learning.
YOUR TRAITS
- Relentless Passion: You bring contagious energy and commitment, making a difference every day.
- High Standards: You strive for excellence; you believe only your best effort creates lasting impact.
- Integrity in Action: You do what’s right, even when it’s hard, and earn trust through your actions.
- Leading with Humility: You listen to and value others, believing you can learn from them.
- Growth Mindset: You believe everyone is on a journey of learning and improving, including yourself.
- Better, Together: You genuinely believe that our strength as a team lies in our differences.
