The 30 Birds Foundation is a fast-growing nonprofit on a mission to rebuild pathways for Afghan girls to learn, lead, and live freely.

Following the fall of Kabul, we helped evacuate more than 450 Afghan girls, family members, and activists to safety—most of whom now reside in Canada and the United States. Thousands more, however, remain in the region, living in refugee camps and informal settlements in Iran, Pakistan, and across South and Central Asia.

We are committed to ensuring educational and professional success for Afghan girls in North America while simultaneously expanding access to learning for girls living as refugees in the region. We provide mentorship, mental health support, scholarships, leadership development, and international educational programming that fosters cross-border sisterhood and solidarity.

Position Summary

We are seeking an experienced, entrepreneurial Deputy Director of Education to design and launch a new virtual education and leadership program that brings Afghan refugee women and girls in the United States into community with Afghan refugee girls living in Iran and Pakistan and surrounding countries. The program will operate via Zoom and be co-facilitated by local educators in both the U.S. and host countries abroad.

You will oversee the design, implementation, monitoring, and expansion of the program, including curriculum development, hiring and managing facilitators, establishing accountability and feedback systems, and securing funding to sustain and grow the initiative. The ideal candidate is a visionary systems-builder who thrives in complex, cross-cultural environments and can translate ambitious ideas into powerful, tangible results.

Key Responsibilities

Program Design & Management
Lead the development of a virtual cross-border education and leadership program for Afghan girls.
Design and implement a hybrid curriculum in consultation with local educators, students, and community leaders.
Hire, train, and support facilitators across multiple countries and time zones.
Develop scalable systems for program operations, communications, and coordination across geographies.

Monitoring, Evaluation & Accountability
Build a robust M&E framework tailored to refugee contexts, including qualitative and quantitative impact metrics.
Establish real-time accountability mechanisms for educators and facilitators in refugee camps and diaspora communities.
Collect and analyze feedback from participants and partners to inform program improvements.

Partnership Development
Cultivate partnerships with local schools, community organizations, refugee camp coordinators, and international NGOs.
Build bridges between Afghan-led initiatives and broader educational networks.

Fundraising & Sustainability
Maintain a detailed budget, track expenses, and forecast program costs.
Collaborate with leadership and development teams to secure funding for program implementation and scale.
Contribute to grant applications, donor reports, and storytelling that reflect program impact.

Qualifications

Fluency in both English & Farsi/Dari required; proficiency in Pashto or Urdu is a strong asset.
Advanced degree in education, international development, refugee studies, or a related field.
5+ years of experience designing or managing education programs, especially in conflict or displacement settings.
Demonstrated experience with monitoring and evaluation systems in humanitarian or refugee contexts.
Strong understanding of the sociopolitical and cultural dynamics impacting Afghan girls and women.
Exceptional organizational and project management skills, with the ability to lead across borders and build systems from scratch.
Proven ability to fundraise, manage budgets, and write grants in the education or international development space.
Experience working with educators, facilitators, or community leaders in both the U.S. and South/Central Asia/Middle East strongly preferred.
Comfort working in a fast-paced, fluid, mission-driven environment.
