ABOUT THE POSITION:
Reporting to the Director, Grants Management, the Associate Director, Grants Management is responsible for developing and implementing a strategy for the Foundation’s applicant and grantee user experiences as well as overseeing consistent internal grants management practices across all portfolios. In this capacity, the Associate Director of Grants Management ensures grants practices are in place to accomplish the strategy of the Foundation. Specific responsibilities include:
Oversee grant lifecycle and grants managers and to ensure consistent and effective grants management practices that align with best practices in sector.
- Directly manage grants managers, providing direction, training and guidance on interpretation of internal policies and IRS regulations;
- Collaborate with colleagues on the Grants Management team to manage documentation of internal grants management policies and procedures;
- Proactively solve problems arising from complexity of work, growth of grantmaking and evolving nature of Salesforce-based grants management system;
- Lead change management efforts that are aimed to improve grantmaking practice; serve as a resource on best practices in the sector;
- Provide expertise in support of other projects as needed.
Lead Foundation’s efforts to understand and improve the external (grantee) user experiences, relying on user-centered design principles to guide approach.
- Partner with Salesforce Grants System Manager and Grants System Associate to ensure system supports desired user experience;
- Align technology solutions with effective processes and principles of equitable grantmaking;
- Develop and continually refine training materials and guides for applicants and grantees that increases access and promotes equity;
- Develop strategies for ongoing feedback loops;
Support Director of Grants Management in strategic planning, goal-setting and team building.
- Provide expertise and thought partnership to the Director on long-term planning to ensure success during continuous growth;
- Serve as an influential voice for grantmaking operations, strategies, and initiatives;
- Provide thought partnership on overall Grants Management team growth; identify alternative workstreams to ensure quality work during heavy volume;
- Build and maintain meaningful relationships with grants management practitioners to understand opportunities and challenges.
Serve as a grants manager on a small portfolio of grants for first 12 months and, eventually, as a back up grants manager
- Review grant recommendations, board packages and related records in the Grants Management System, enduring accuracy, quality and consistency
- Draft grant agreements in collaboration with program staff, legal, and finance.
- Monitor grants in partnership with program and evaluation staff by reviewing grantee reports and milestone deliverables, ensuring timely release of associated payments.
As a senior member of the team, the Associate Director of Grants Management will guide and coach team members, support continued professional development, and work with the Director and other team members to foster a collaborative and supportive team culture.
CANDIDATE REQUIREMENTS:
To be considered, candidates will possess a majority of the following professional and personal attributes and competencies:
- A minimum of 10 years of grants management related work experience or significant operations experience in nonprofit sector;
- Experience in philanthropy is required, preferably working with or part of a family foundation and with direct grants management experience;
- Demonstrated prior success in leading, managing, and developing teams and driving a strong positive culture in alignment with an organization’s values and goals;
- Strong ability to inspire and motivate teams to embrace change, influencing and building consensus throughout transformation;
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills;
- Strong collaboration skills; a track record of building trust among stakeholders;
- Ability to influence up and across an organization;
- Commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion;
- Sound judgment, integrity, humility and respect for confidentiality.
