About the project (Future of Work)
As part of its commitment to youth empowerment, ZAF is implementing an initiative that aims to catalyse youth employment by leveraging technology to connect skilled youth with real-world job opportunities. It also aims to understand the drivers of unemployment among the youth, and potential factors behind the relegation of youths in low paying jobs/certain jobs-predictors of the choice of work. Ultimately, the project seeks to build a surveillance mechanism; an observatory of skills and jobs which can work in a real time basis.
Zizi Afrique is partnering with Swahili Pot Hub Foundation, Global Development Incubator and Mombasa County to test on how a successful observatory would look like. Following this Zizi Afrique seeks to recruit research assistants to assist with the tracking and updating of data from selected food and beverage enterprises in Mvita county.
The research assistant will be expected to:
- Establish relations with F&B enterprises in Mvita sub-county as assigned.
- Unearth emerging job vacancies per occupation on a weekly basis and liaise with the employer relations office at Swahili port.
- Carry out an analysis of both the formal and informal sector work and generate evidence of the trends and how it may characterize the future of work.
Key duties and responsibilities
The research assistants will be responsible for the following tasks:
- Participate in the training at a designated location.
- Assist in scheduling and field preparation, including identifying and locating sampled hospitality establishments.
- Obtain informed consent from all study participants prior to any data collection.
- Collect and record data appropriately
- Establish and maintain close active relations with employer through constant follow ups.
- Identify job vacancies and communicate them immediately to the supervisor.
- Support data management tasks as required.
- Ensure accuracy and completeness of all collected data.
- Adhere strictly to ethical guidelines, ensuring confidentiality of all information and participants always.
Qualifications, Skills, and Experience
- A diploma is desirable, although candidates with a KCSE and demonstrates experience in data collection and building relationships with communities is acceptable.
- Must be a resident any of the wards in Mvita sub-county.
- Fluent in English and Kiswahili
- Demonstrated previous experience in data collection using both qualitative and quantitative methods.
- Prior experience of using mobile data collection applications such as Kobo Collect.
- Experience in conducting research involving multiple stakeholders including employers.
Desirable attributes
- A strong understanding of ethical research practices, specifically a value driven person.
- Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
- Excellent communication skills (written and verbal).
- Experience working with diverse communities and sectors, particularly in Mombasa County.
- Excellent reporting skills.
Contract Duration
The contract will be valid over a period of at least four months, with specific milestones and deliverables defined at the start of the engagement.
