Role Profile - Programme Officer
The Hg Foundation
At all levels, and across the globe, there are significant skill shortages in the technology sector. At the same time, some groups – especially women and girls, those from low-income backgrounds and from certain ethnic groups - are far less likely to gain good tech qualifications and access tech jobs.
The Hg Foundation's vision is that the tech workforce of the future harnesses the talents of all, regardless of background. To achieve this, we help under-represented groups to access high quality jobs in tech by supporting education and employment programmes across the UK, Europe and US.
- Ambition - To build a portfolio of world class programmes through strategic partnerships with high quality, evidence-based organisations
- Delivery - Providing long term funding, operational support and advocacy – including through the expertise and assets of Hg and its technology-based network
- Impact - Using data and analysis to understand the root causes of the problem, clear metrics to track outcomes, assess impact and make the case for system wide scale up
The Foundation began work in 2020 and has now funded over 40 partnerships, ranging from work to support girls' aspirations in STEM, to projects to support undergraduates from minority and low-income backgrounds access tech careers. It has committed $40m to date and its work reaches over 70,000 learners.
In Autumn 2022 it appointed its first Chief Executive, James Turner, former CEO of the social mobility charity The Sutton Trust. Since then, the team has expanded to include three Portfolio Leads and a new Data & Impact Lead starting in the summer of 2025. The Foundation also draws on the support of external expert consultants and has financial, legal, communications and operational support from Hg, including three part time Hg staff embedded in the Foundation team.
The Foundation has ambitious plans for the future, which will see the number of partnerships grow, underpinned by further investment from Hg, as well as deeper operational involvement in some of its flagship partnerships. To support these plans, the Foundation is expanding its team and seeking someone eager to begin or advance their career in the non-profit sector. This newly created role at The Hg Foundation will provide essential support to Portfolio Leads and offers an excellent opportunity for professional development in the foundation space.
The role will be majority focused on supporting the STEM Education programmes and delivery of the mAths Online Programmes, which in 2025/26 will be delivered across 4 leading universities. The mAths Online Programmes support disadvantaged students to get the top grades in A level Maths and Further Maths. The Foundation is acting as the Central Hub for the programme, helping to underpin quality, organise central resource and pave the way for future expansion in 2026/27.
The Hg Foundation is an independent UK-registered charity, but its work is generously funded by Hg, through a portion of carried interest from current and future funds, and a percentage of annual profits. The Foundation's Board comprises a range of senior individuals from the business, as well as independent figures with experience of education and tech, including Sir Kevan Collins, most recently the government's education catch-up adviser, and Elona Mortimer-Zhika, UK Tech CEO of the Year and former CEO of software firm IRIS.
