The National Center on Education and the Economy is looking for current Master's or PhD students to intern with our Policy and Research & Evaluation teams.

Who We Are

For more than three decades, the National Center on Education and the Economy (NCEE) has been leading major advances in American education, helping to build a better, more equitable public education system that prepares all students to thrive in a changing global economy. We do this by studying education systems both domestically and around the globe to surface best practices and emerging innovations that can inspire American policymakers and practitioners to action.

The Work

Interns will support ongoing policy work to support states and school districts strengthen their own systems to better serve all students and prepare them for a fast-changing world as well as research on the current design and future direction of high-performing education systems globally. Specific tasks will be assigned based on the experience and background of individual interns. Potential work includes:

Researching key topics for our international benchmarking work such as advances in EdTech/genAI, the provision of supports for struggling students, changes in assessment models, educational leadership, and strategies for supporting teachers
Supporting ongoing evaluation of our work in the field, such as developing interview protocols, conducting interviews with school leaders, analyzing cohort data, and writing up key findings
Drafting research and/or policy briefs for internal and external audiences
Analyzing state, national, and international education and workforce policies and data and summarizing key information for a range of audiences
Creating state policy landscape analyses to inform our work in specific states
Preparing memos and resources in response to queries from our partners

Internships can be virtual or have a hybrid schedule with our Washington DC office. School year internships require a minimum of 15 hours / week for six months, typically mid-September to mid-April. A competitive stipend will be provided.

You Are…

… a Master's or PhD student in education, public policy, or a related field. Candidates must be authorized to work in the United States. Specific skills include:

Creativity and lateral thinking
Expertise and interest in education and changing patterns of work
Research and analysis (quantitative and qualitative)
Manipulating data and spreadsheets, including making graphs
Good visual skills for infographics, PowerPoint presentations, etc.
Editing and proofreading work for publication
Strong written and verbal communication skills (in English)
Good team-player and ability to work effectively in a diverse and dynamic environment
